Unlike a durable camera body, film contains chemical layers that can be affected by heat, moisture, pressure and age. Sealed retail packs should remain protected from direct sunlight and uncontrolled storage conditions. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions printed for the exact film pack.

Record dates at receiving, not after a sales problem

The receiving process should capture film family, frame style, lot or traceability reference where available, production or expiry information, quantity and carton condition. This makes stock rotation and customer support far easier.

• Photograph damaged outer cartons before acceptance decisions.
• Keep different expiry dates as separate inventory lots.
• Avoid mixing mini, SQUARE and WIDE under one generic film code.

Use first-expire-first-out rotation

First-expire-first-out means the inventory with the earliest suitable expiry date is dispatched first. It is more useful than simple first-in-first-out when shipments arrive with different remaining shelf life. Sales promotions should be planned before stock becomes difficult to place.

Transport and destination storage are part of the quality plan

Long exposure to hot vehicles, loading areas or uncontrolled warehouses can undermine careful origin storage. Ask logistics providers about the planned route and advise downstream buyers to follow the pack instructions after receipt. A quotation should state pack configuration and available date information rather than promising an undefined shelf life.
